Friday of the First Week

Another Lenten reflection, in response to today's readings (Ezk 18:21-28; Mt 5:20-26); as well as "Falling in Love During the End of Times," from doctordaft's Substack.
Friday of the First Week

Hear now, O house of Israel: Is it not your ways that are not just?

We are all angry with our brothers.
We insult them: "You fool!" we say.

God takes us when he wills it; why, then, are we so eager to send our brothers To Him?
We accuse them of turning from God, feigning righteousness to justify iniquity.
And in doing so we ourselves turn to iniquity.
From whatever righteousness we had. From our mothers. From our Father.

We die.

Are you a prophet? Engineering your return to some promised land,
as if you're not wandering still, shepherds in the wilderness,
-- you play the victim so well, but who's the devil this time? --
using wicked machines and walls and guns and bombs,
the wrong pillar of cloud, the wrong pillar of flame.

If we are human and live, we struggle with God. But you...

You bring new meaning to old words.

(And not in the way you may intend.)
